A Seattle Hypothetical: What if Pearl Jam swapped the earnest crooning of Eddie Vedder for the heroic preening of Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell? Actually, that’s not a hypothetical. Released twenty years ago today as a tribute to Andrew Wood, the singer of Mother Love Bone, who died 13-months earlier from an overdose (of course), Temple of the Dog is highlighted by Say Hello 2 Heaven.
Eddie Vedder’s vocal contributions range from the subtle background work to full verses on the overtly socialist Hunger Strike.
Initially appreciated by critics but received poorly by record buyers, the intervening explosion of the “Seattle” sound pulled “Temple of the Dog” out of the bargain bin in 1992 and back into heavy rotation at trendy music shops and the aspirationally alternative video store where I spent the year after the “Year Punk Broke”.
